Ken Smith, Owner-Designer

Gardensheds® is driven by the zeal of its energetic owner, Ken Smith, who brings an enviable wealth of knowledge and experience to the company.  An ardent admirer of Thomas Jefferson, the English landscape designer Gertrude Jekyll, and the British environmental sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, Smith is educated in history, architecture, design and woodworking.  He cites Monticello, Poplar Forest, Hyde Park, Williamsburg, Middleton Place and Carter’s Grove as places of inspiration.  An alumnus of the prestigious graduate school, Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Smith’s career includes working with the late fashion designer, Geoffrey Beene and the prominent architect, Michael Graves. In addition to his previous entrepreneurial successes, Smith is a former prep school teacher and cross-country coach. In his free time he and his physician wife raise and breed elite Huacaya alpacas on their picturesque pre-revolutionary property near the Delaware River in central New Jersey.

There’s a story to every business and we’d like to share ours with you.  Gardensheds® was founded in 1993 on the simple premise that there is a need for finely crafted small buildings of architectural merit and historical inspiration.  What began as a “hunch” has since proven true. To date we have constructed more than 1,500 buildings for discerning clients from Maine to California and all points between.

If our buildings look different it’s because they are different.  We set out to design something other than the ordinary, non-descript, ubiquitous “shed”.  No vinyl or plastic. No low pitch roofs. No plywood. No shortcut craftsmanship. No limited 5-year useful life. Rather than follow the crowd we set out with Robert Frost on a different path—one less traveled—Original, exclusive, copyrighted designs. Premium, sustainable materials that we mill ourselves.  Uncompromising craftsmanship. Historically inspired designs that are properly scaled and proportioned. Steep pitch roofs. Extensive selection of windows and doors and hand-forged hardware we manufacture in-house. Wide selection of building options, including insulation and pre-wire electrical. Fully finished and painted. Heirloom quality. Ready to use the day of delivery.

Today, Gardensheds® is guided by the same principles that have always guided the company to its well-deserved success.  By intention we are a small company with an attentive hands-on owner and limited annual production.  For us, bigger and more is not always better and best.  Being small allows us to provide a level of client service commensurate with our product and, importantly, allows us to keep our talented team busy year in and out.

We’ve designed our website to be both visual and informative.  Do be sure to visit our Facebook® link and blog as there are weekly photos and postings that offer another “window” into who we are.  When you’re ready to order the process itself is simple and straightforward. We’ve tried to address the most frequently asked questions (FAQs).  Still, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call!  We’re here to help—before, during and after the sale.

Thank-you for visiting.
