HOT OFF THE PRESS!
See us in
Gordon Hayward’s
wonderful new book.

Years ago, when we first started out, we did not paint our buildings. It was not long before we started to hear from clients asking that we include this service. Typically we heard comments like, “This took way longer than I imagined it would.” Or, “I never want to paint another building.” Or, our favorite, “My husband promised he would paint the building and six months later it’s still unfinished.” Or, a desperate plea for help. “My finish is blistering, HELP!”

After listening to untold scores of comments we decided to offer finishing service as an integral part of our process. As part of our philosophy we wanted to delivery a fully assembled and finished building ready to use the day of delivery. We have since finished more than 1,000 buildings.

Today, each building or product that leaves our workshop is fully finished. In addition, 50% of our clients request interior paint as well. We know every detail of each building. Because we’ve seen just about every imaginable color combination we’re happy to make suggestions.

To us the finish is every bit as important as the construction of the building itself and one which we have invested in considerably to ensure years of enjoyment and durability. As a point of reference, our standard Williamsburg model (9-6 x 9-6) requires $350 of material cost and 32 hours of labor to complete. Our dedicated 5,000 square foot paint facility is temperature and humidity controlled and staffed with two full-time painters. Having a controlled environment ensures proper paint/stain application and cure.

Buildings painted outside a controlled facility are subject to moisture retention. This will result in improper material bonding, with blistering, peeling and inevitably mold/mildew. The finish we employ is a multi-step, involved process that requires use of special fill, shellac, multiple sanding applications, and specially formulated primer to inhibit mold/moisture. Our primer is not available over-the-counter.

All buildings receive two top coats. We have special mask templates for window glass to ensure that all paint lines are crisp and clean. All finishing is done prior to application of roofing material. This allows for interior roof lathing to be painted to create a nice contrast with the cedar shingles. It is just this sort of attention to detail that is the hallmark of our finishing process. All of which is to say that we consider the finish of your building to be one of the most important steps to delivering the best quality building we can to you. There are no short cuts to quality.
